The best Alternative to rice cereal: 3 ingredients only

I dislike most baby cereals (porridges in the market for a few reasons):

  • Baby cereals in the market are high in sugar and processed oils. Sugars and processed oils contribute to diabetes, obesity, a quick preference to high sugar foods, and most importantly have a negative impact on immunity and gut bacteria.
  • They are also based on rice which is high in arsenic and isn’t recommended daily by pediatric associations because it has been shown to be a carconigen if consumed in big amounts. This is especially true for little children who can be impacted the most.
  • Many rice cereals in the market contain artificial flavors

All you have to do is read the ingredients in the most popular rice cereal in the supermarket to see what I am saying to be true. I wrote about this in more details in “Baby rice cereal: why should you avoid it”I present you a better variation of baby cereal mix that is just as easy to make, but ten times healthier.

Is there an alternative to baby rice cereal?

There sure is. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests we use other grains than rice, and here we use of of the best grains, oats. Why do I love oats for babies?

  • Oats are high in fibers which are amazing for the baby’s growing digestive tract. It will literally provide the baby’s gut with the food it needs to thrive. A baby who consumes oats will have a much healthier microbiota and thus better immunity than a baby who consumes rice. In addition, the baby will have less exposure to arsenic which is a known carcinogen.
  • The fibers in oats make it a slow to digest carbohydrate, releasing sugar slowly into the blood stream. This will allow the baby to have energy for a longer period of time. It also prevents the quick spikes and mood crashes high sugar foods can provide such as most rice cereal brands
  • Oats include iron which are VERY necessary for the growing baby. Iron is usually deficient in most babies diets. This can lead to anemia, developmental delay, and irreversible damage.
  • Oats have mood enhancing properties! It is known to have a relaxing effect on sleep.
  • Oats can help relieve constipation due to the beta-glucans it contains.
